The countdown to the first serve of the year has begun for the Escambia County Lady Blue Devils volleyball team who will play their first match on Aug. 20 at home against the Flomaton Lady Hurricanes.
With the beginning of the season just more than a week away, the Lady Blue Devils have begun practice and are looking to gain experience before their first serve.
ECHS head coach Sarah Watkins said she is excited about getting the season underway, and added she will be interested to see how her team performs.
The Lady Blue Devils are in a rebuilding stage this year after losing several key players to graduation.
Watkins said her team is inexperienced with hardly any returning players from the 2008 squad.
With so many young players taking the floor for the Lady Blue Devils, it gives Watkins a couple of different views of her team.
She said the youth could be a good thing for development purposes, but added that it’s also bad because of no true game experience.
Dailey and Mason will be looked at by Watkins to carry a load and lead their younger teammates. Watkins said they have taken on their roles as leaders and have shown they can handle the task.
In preparation for their first game, the Lady Blue Devils are continuing to practice for their first game in eight days.
Watkins said right now the team is working on its fundamentals in order to be game ready for their match up against Flomaton.
The Lady Blue Devils match up against Flomaton begins at 4:30 p.m. at Escambia County High School on Aug. 20.
