Serves were sent over the nets for the first match of the regular season as the Flomaton Lady Hurricanes handed the hometown Escambia County Lady Blue Devils volleyball team their first loss of the season in Atmore Thursday.
The Lady Hurricanes (1-0, 0-0) defeated the Lady Blue Devils (0-1, 0-0) in three straight games in a matchup of county rivals.
Lady Blue Devils head coach Sarah Watkins said her young team had several great moments throughout the match.
The difference in how the Lady Blue Devils played in each game could be seen by everyone including their coach.
Watkins said that this match helped get her five freshmen a lot of game experience.
The strengths Watkins noticed in her team were a weakness that plagued her 2008 squad.
She said that serving the ball seemed to be much better Thursday that it was all of the previous season.
To prepare for their next game, the Lady Blue Devils will continue to work in practice to make sure they are fundamentally sound for their upcoming opponents, Spanish Fort and LeFlore.
Watkins said building up their fundamentals will help make the team more competitive.
The Lady Blue Devils host Spanish Fort and LeFlore in a tri-match Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
