In late January, Escambia Academy senior Jon Dean received a tremendous honor as he was named Poarch’s Athlete of the Year during the Poarch Sports Banquet.
Dean, a multi-sport athlete at Escambia Academy, said he was surprised to be awarded with the honor.
Earning the Athlete of the Year award involves more than just success in athletics.
The nominees also have to be involved in school activities as well as maintain good grades.
Dean said being involved in extracurricular activities is something that helped him. He added that all athletes need to remember that there is more in life than just sports.
Along with winning the award, Dean is a role model for younger children who have seen him on an athletic field.
Dean said winning the award helps him show those children that anything can be accomplished.
Winning his Tribe’s award is something that makes Dean proud.
Dean said his happy that he is able to represent his Tribe anytime he can.
When it comes to his best sports memory, Dean does not have to go back very far.
Dean said the 2009 football season is one he will always remember and not just for his team’s success.
With Dean’s time at Escambia Academy winding down as graduation approaches, he is looking to his future in college.
Dean said he plans to attend Auburn University, and added he hopes to play football.
Once in school, Dean will begin looking into what he would like to study for his major.
He said he has not decided on anything, but has some ideas.
