The Escambia Academy cheerleading squad leaves Monday for the UCA Cheer Camp for the AISA at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
The Cougars cheerleaders will attend the camp from Monday through Thursday and will attempt to defend their first-place finish in last year’s Home Pom competition.
Cyndi Vaughn, sponsor for the varsity cheerleaders, said the goal is to bring home another first-place finish.
“Last year, the girls won the championship for their division in the Home Pom, and they are hoping to do the same this year,” Vaughn said.
The Cougars’ squad should have a strong chance at winning first place again with an experienced group of cheerleaders.
Bailey Vaughn, co-captain for the EA cheerleaders, said every girl on the squad has some form of experience cheering.
“Everyone has cheered before,” Bailey Vaughn said. “We have a really solid group with either returning varsity cheerleaders or junior varsity cheerleaders that have moved up.”
The cheerleaders for Escambia Academy have been working hard all summer to make sure they have their routines right.
Cyndi Vaughn said the girls have practiced every day since the beginning of June, and added extra workouts have been added.
“Since the first of June, the girls have been working at it,” Cyndi Vaughn said. “This week they are doing two-a-days to make sure they have their routine set up correctly.”
The workouts for the EA cheerleaders include not only practicing their routine and fundamentals, but working out in the weightroom as well as running as well.
Rachel Fuller, captain of the EA cheerleading squad, said the girls have been working hard to make sure they are in the best shape possible for the camp and competition.
“We have been working extremely hard to perfect our Home Pom routine,” Fuller said. “Every morning we work on that routine as well as our stunts, tumbles and toe jumps. We are also running a mile every day.”
The Home Pom competition that the Cougars’ cheerleaders hope to defend is something that is completely made up by the group.
Bailey Vaughn has been the choreographer for the routine with additional help from Fuller.
Bailey Vaughn said the routine is difficult to perfect because changes have to be made according to the how it looks with the squad.
“Home Pom is a routine that we choreograph completely on our own,” Bailey Vaughn said. “Once we have the choreography finished, we practice with the rest of the squad to see how it looks. Changes are made if necessary to make sure it looks right with all of the girls.”
