Kim Thomas, general counsel for the Alabama Department of Corrections, confirmed Friday that an inmate housed at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore was killed Tuesday.
“The incident is under investigation,” he said. “There are suspect(s) who are being investigated for that crime.”
According to Thomas, there is a section of the Code of Alabama that provides for the ADOC to perform an investigation using its internal investigations division similar to a police department.
“This will be investigated by them,” he said. “That investigation will then be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office in Escambia County and will be handled as a prosecution for them just as any other crime.”
The identity of the deceased or the manner in which the homicide occurred is not being released at this time, Thomas said.
Holman currently maintains 630 general population beds, 200 single cells, and 168 death row cells for a capacity of 998 maximum through minimum custody inmates to include a large contingency of “life without parole” inmates.
