Senior year will hold one more page in Kristen Gehman’s scrapbook after she returned from a four-week stint as a Page in Washington, D.C.
Gehman, the daughter of David and Sheryl Gehman, was nominated for the honor by Congressman Jo Bonner to work in the U.S. House of Representatives in the nation’s capital.
“Kristen is an exemplary student,” Bonner said. “It was an honor to nominate someone of her dedication and scholarship as a congressional Page.”
Gehman, who is now a senior at Escambia County High School, served in the second summer Page session in Washington, D.C. from July 11 through Aug. 6, Bonner said.
“Ms. Gehman holds the distinction of not only representing Southwest Alabama in the summer Page program, but she is the second page to come from Escambia County High School in the last two years,” Bonner said. “In 2008, I also had the pleasure of nominating Tray Smith as a congressional Page.”
Unlike college-age congressional interns who serve in the office of a single Member of Congress, congressional Pages are high school students who are chosen as support staff for the full U.S. House of Representatives.
During her time in Washington, D.C. as a Page, Gehman was afforded rare access to the House Chamber and assisted lawmakers on the House Floor while the legislative body was in session. Pages frequently travel between the Capitol and the congressional office buildings delivering official correspondence. They also attend special classes held at the Library of Congress, which enhance their knowledge of the legislative branch of government and the traditions of Congress, Bonner said.
Gehman is active at Escambia County High School serving as parliamentarian and president of the Student Government Association (SGA), president of the Escambia County High School band, vice president of the Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS) and co-editor of the student newspaper, EsCoHi. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and the Scholars Bowl team.
