Two Flomaton residents received serious injuries Monday when the truck they were traveling in lost control and rolled over several times before coming to a stop on its side on Hwy. 31 at the 42.9-mile marker sign in Atmore.

Grace Byrd, 20, and Kenan Johnson, 24, were traveling east on Hwy. 31 Monday when the green 2000 Nissan Frontier Byrd was driving lost control and ended up on its side just before Smith Tractor.

The accident, which occurred around 12:20 p.m., happened just east of Smith Tractor on Hwy. 31 and only involved the one vehicle and left both occupants badly hurt.

According to Emmanuel Banks, of Atmore, he had just left a local business and was traveling east when he saw the accident happen.

“I has just left David’s Paint & Body going towards Atmore,” Banks said. “They were in my lane and then accelerated back into their lane and ran off the road, hit the ditch and the truck started flipping. It flipped one time and then hit the tailgate and flipped again and I saw the girl’s body fly out of the truck.”

Upon seeing the body fly out of the truck, Banks pulled over to the side of the road to see if the occupants were injured.

Banks said he could hear Byrd yelling that she was hurt when he got close the scene.

“I could hear the girl (Byrd) screaming that she couldn’t feel her legs,” Banks said. “So I went back to David’s and told David (Gibbs) about the accident. When I got back, I could still hear the girl saying she couldn’t feel her legs and she was bleeding badly and some one came and wrapped a T-shirt around her head to stop the bleeding.”

Both Byrd and Johnson were transported to Atmore Community Hospital following the accident. Trooper Fillingim worked the accident.
