The top-ranked Monroe Academy Volunteers scored early and often as they jumped out to a 35-0 first quarter lead digging a huge hole for the Escambia Academy Cougars to fill.

The Vols went on to defeat the visiting Cougars 49-0 putting an end to EA’s season. Monroe will now prepare for the first round of the AISA state playoffs.

Heading into the contest Friday night, EA Head Coach Heath Gibson knew Monroe was the most composed team his team had faced to date.

“Monroe is one of the most balanced teams that we will see this season,” Gibson said. “They do it well on both sides of the ball and go 13 players deep. Those 13 give them a chance to win every game.”

Balanced is exactly what the Vols showed the Cougars as they were able to run and pass the ball at will chalking up some big yardage early resulting in quick scores.

Despite a few big plays offensively for EA, Monroe Academy’s defense was able to keep the Cougars out of the end zone all night.

With the loss, Escambia Academy ends its season with a 4-7 record overall and a 2-6 record in Class 2A.
