Fire gutted a mobile home Friday morning off Jack Springs Road destroying not only the home, but also most of the family’s personal effects.
The home, located in the Atmore Mobile Home Park, housed a family of three. The occupants, Calvin Hartley, 23, Kelli Boyington, 21, and her 2-year-old son were, however, able to save a few items, mostly clothing, from the blaze.
Hartley, who was asleep when the fire started, said when he realized the mobile home was on fire, he quickly alerted his family and exited the burning home.
“I grabbed my lady and her kid and we got out of there,” he said as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. “When I woke up there was smoke to the top of the roof.”
Personnel with Atmore Ambulance treated Boyington, who is pregnant, as a precautionary measure.
Atmore Fire Department Chief Gerry McGhee said it is believed faulty electrical wires caused the fire, which started in the back bedroom. At the scene, Hartley said he had been experiencing several electrical problems as recently as Thursday.
“Yesterday, the dryer cord caught fire,” he said.
Firefighters with the Atmore Fire Department worked to douse the flames with assistance from the Poarch Fire Department.
McGhee said all the firemen worked hard at the scene.
“They did a good job,” he said. “We had a quick response and got right to work on the fire.”
Officers with the Atmore Police Department also responded to the scene.
An Atmore firefighter was later transported to Atmore Community Hospital complaining of severe back pain. The status of his condition was unknown at press time.
As for Hartley and his family, he said they would probably stay at his mother’s house until permanent housing was found.
Atmore firemen responded to a second house fire just before noon Friday at 111 Martin Luther King Dr. after one of the home’s occupants reported the smell of smoke in the attic and the inside roof turning black.
The home received some water and smoke damage, but McGhee said it was not a total loss.
Following a busy day of fire response, McGhee advised residents to be cautious when using heaters and fireplaces, as the weather gets colder in the coming weeks.
“Be sure to check heaters and clean them out,” he said. “Do not place anything around space heaters.”
