Lady Cougars crush Jackson

Tight defense and a 28-point outburst in the second quarter helped the Escambia Academy Lady Cougars rout the Jackson Lady Eagles 56-24 in Canoe on Monday night.

The Lady Cougars (3-1, 0-0) bombarded the Lady Eagles with points as they led from start to finish in the win.

Lady Cougars head coach Heath Gibson said his team really came alive in the second period.

“We had a great second quarter,” Gibson said. “We hit a lot of outside shots and opened up our inside game.”

The Lady Cougars opened the game with a low-scoring quarter, but still outscored Jackson 9-5.

The outburst in the second quarter made a huge difference as they hit their shots and shut down Jackson outscoring the visitors 28-1 to take a 37-6 lead into halftime.

Following halftime, the Lady Cougars continued to dominate the game as they extended their lead by one point and outscored the Lady Eagles 8-7.

Leading 45-13, EA played some younger players and tied the Lady Eagles with 11 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the huge 56-24 win.

Lady Cougars senior Amber Huskey led the Lady Cougars with a double-double recording 16 points and 14 rebounds. Huskey also had five steals, one block and one assist in the win.

Lady Cougar Grayson Emmons finished the win with 11 points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Peyton Snider finished the game with seven points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist, while Lacie Flowers posted six points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists.

Kristen Matthews finished with five points for the Lady Cougars and recorded three steals, three assists and two rebounds.

Rachel Fuller and Samantha Lee each scored four points with Fuller recording three rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Lee had four rebounds, one assis and one steal.

Lady Cougar Taylor Helton finished the game with two points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.

Caitlyn Bruley rounded out the Lady Cougars’ scoring with two points to go along with one rebound, one assist and one steal.

Escambia Academy’s Lady Cougars opened their home schedule with a victory on Friday night crushing the Central Christian Lady Saints 70-43 in Canoe.

The Lady Cougars (2-1, 0-0) controlled the tempo of the entire game as they suffocated the Lady Saints with their defense, while shooting the lights out offensively.

Cougars head coach Heath Gibson said his team gave it their all to earn the victory.

“The girls played tremendous defense for four quarters,” Gibson said. “They also had their best shooting performance this season. Shooting 48 percent from the field is phenomenal.”

The Lady Cougars opened the game with a large lead as they outscored the Lady Saints 18-10 in the first quarter.

EA extended their lead before halftime outscoring Central Christian 20-10 in the second quarter to go into the break ahead 38-20.

Following halftime, the Lady Cougars continued to dominate the game on both ends of the court.

In the third quarter, the Lady Cougars continued to pour points onto the scoreboard as they score 23 points to the Lady Saints’ 12 to lead 61-32 heading into the final quarter.

With a large lead in the fourth period, the Lady Cougars allowed the Lady Saints to outscore them 11-9, but did not give up the large deficit they had already mounted winning 70-43.

Lady Cougars senior forward Amber Huskey led all scorers with 32 points and posted 14 rebounds for a double-double. She also recorded seven steals, one block and one assist in the win.

Lady Cougars Peyton Snider and Lacie Flowers each scored eight points for the Lady Cougars in the win. Snider finished the game four rebounds, while Flowers recorded three rebounds, two assists and five steals.

Grayson Emmons and Paige Allen each scored five points for the Lady Cougars w ith Emmons recording five assists, two steals and two rebounds, while Allen recorded three rebounds and one steal.

Kristen Matthews and Rachel Fuller both scored four points for EA with Matthews recording three assists, three steals and two rebounds. Fuller record two assists, two steals and one rebound.
