Lady Cougars dominate Lady Gators

The Lady Cougars of Canoe picked up their eighth win of the season in dominating fashion last Friday night as they crushed the Clarke Prep Lady Gators 53-22 on the road in Grove Hill.

The Lady Cougars (8-4, 2-0) controlled the game on both ends of the court with a powerful offense and a suffocating defense that only allowed the Lady Gators to score double-digits in one quarter.

Escambia Academy opened the game with a strong run as they came out of the gate on a 17-4 run in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Cougars held their 13-point lead into halftime as the two teams each scored 11 points. At the break, EA led 28-15.

Following halftime, it was all Lady Cougars as they finished the game by running away from Clarke Prep.

In the third quarter, the Lady Cougars built on their lead as they outscored the Lady Gators 16-2 to move into the final quarter leading 44-17.

EA finished the game by extending their already massive lead by another four points as they outscored the Lady Gators 9-5 to pick up the 53-22 win.

Lady Cougars head coach Heath Gibson said his team’s strong defense helped secure the win.

“Our defense was really strong against Clarke Prep,” he said. “Our shooting still needs to improve with us only hitting 15-of-70 from the field.”

Lady Cougars senior forward Amber Huskey led the Lady Cougars with 21 points and nine rebounds. She also recorded three blocks anad two steals.

Lady Cougar Taylor Helton added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Peyton Snider scored eight points and pulled down two boards. Helton also finished with two steals.

Rachel Fuller scored two points for EA to go along with two steals, while Grayson Emmons added three points, three steals, two rebounds and an assist.

Paige Allen and Meagan Duncan each scored two points with Duncan recording two steals.
