Blue Devils crush Chiefs

Friday’s senior night at Escambia County High School will be one that this year’s senior Blue Devils will remember always after they ended their regular season with a 40-point domination of the Northview Chiefs.

The No. 5 Blue Devils (20-7, 6-0) played to the best of their abilities against the Chiefs and pounded them four quarters on their way to a 68-28 victory.

Blue Devils head coach Anthony Hayes said his team was able to get the victory with great play from several of his players.

“Northview is a good team no matter what the score is,” he said. “Our team was paced by several different players. That really helped us open up the game.”

Escambia County used their talent to build a strong lead in the first quarter outscoring Northview 21-9.

In the second quarter, the Chiefs were able to hold the Blue Devils from adding to their lead, but Atmore’s defense prevented Northview from cutting into the lead as both teams scored eight points.

At halftime, the Blue Devils led 29-17.

Following the break, the Blue Devils used the final two quarters to put an exclamation point on their final regular season win.

Atmore was able to extend their lead in the third quarter with a strong performance on both ends of the court. The Blue Devils pulled out to a 49-26 lead after outscoring Northview 20-9.

The Blue Devils dominated the final eight minutes of play only allowing the Chiefs to score two points, while scoring 19 of their own to come away with the massive 40-point win.

Blue Devil center Andrew Rodgers led ECHS with a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

Marshall Rolin and T.C. Brown also scored in double digits for ECHS. Rolin recorded 11 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists, while Brown finished the game with 10 points, one rebound, one assist and a steal.

Blue Devil Cedric Pierce added eight points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.

Peter Myers recorded six points for ECHS and also posted four rebounds and a steal.

Darious Burrous scored three points with four rebounds.

Escambia County’s scoring was rounded out by Fred Knight, Walter Franklin and Dalvin Craft who each scored two points.

The Blue Devils open the area tournament with Saraland this Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Escambia County High School.

Blue Devils 62

Escambia County’s strong run to the end of the season hit a bump on Thursday night at Escambia County High School against the Class 6A Robertsdale Bears.

The Blue Devils (19-7, 6-0) were beaten in the final minutes of their match up against the Bears who came away with a 64-62 victory.

The Blue Devils started the game slow allowing the Bears to pull ahead 17-8 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, ECHS bounced back and took the lead from Robertsdale outscoring them 23-6 to go into halftime leading 31-23.

Following halftime, things were a lot tighter, but the Blue Devils could not hold off a late charge by the Bears.

The Blue Devils surrendered 15 points in the third quarter and scored 12 of their own cutting their eight-point lead down to five points as the final quarter began.

Robertsdale took advantage of the momentum they had built in the third period and used it to outscore ECHS again in the fourth quarter 26-19 to pull out the close 64-62 win.

Andrew Rodgers led the Blue Devils with 19 points, while Tony McAroy added 12 points.

C.J. Pierce finished the game with seven points and Dalvin Craft scored six for ECHS.

Marshall Rolin added four points, while T.C. Brown, Peter Myers, Fred Knight, Demarcus McMillian all scored two each.

Blue Devils 36

Bulldogs 33

The Blue Devils finished their area season undefeated with 6-0 record by defeating the UMS-Wright Bulldogs 36-33 last Tuesday night at ECHS.

The Blue Devils (19-6, 6-0) had to overcome a poor third quarter in a game featuring poor shooting by both teams to earn the 36-33 win.

The Blue Devils fared better than the Bulldogs in the first quarter as they opened the game by outscoring their area rivals 11-5.

Escambia County built on their lead in the second quarter by outscoring UMS-Wright 12-7 to go into halftime leading 23-12.

Following halftime, the Blue Devils had to overcome a strong third period by the Bulldogs to come out of the game with a win.

In the third quarter, UMS-Wright clawed back into the game and took the lead by dominating the Blue Devils 18-6.

Trailing 30-29 to open the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils found a way to finish the game strong outscoring the Bulldogs 7-3 to get the win 36-33.

Blue Devils head coach Anthony Hayes said the win was a good way for his team to round out area play.

“It’s great to go 6-0 in our area,” he said. “We played a pretty good ball game up to the third quarter. We allowed a good player to make some shots in that period and they outplayed us. Our guys were able to refocus in the fourth quarter and closed the game out. I’m proud of their composure down the stretch.”

Blue Devil C.J. Pierce led ECHS with 13 points and also recorded two steals, one block and an assist.

Dalvin Craft and T.C. Brown each added six points for the Blue Devils. Craft recorded five rebounds, three blocks and a steal, while Brown had two rebounds, one assist and a steal.

Andrew Rodgers scored four points to go along with four rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Fred Knight and Tony McAroy each scored three points for ECHS with Knight pulling down five rebounds and McAroy recording one.

Demarcus McMillian rounded out the scoring with two points, two rebounds, one block and one assist.
