Trysheika Sanders said a Tuesday morning accident that sent her and another woman to the hospital was just that — an accident.
Sanders was airlifted to U.S.A. Medical Center in Mobile for treatment of her injuries sustained in the crash early Tuesday on a stretch of U.S. 31 near Nokomis. Faye Odom, the driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash, was taken by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital for treatment of injuries in the crash.
Sanders said some statements made by witnesses at the scene weren’t exactly accurate.
“It may have looked like I was trying to pass some cars, but I wasn’t,” Sanders said. “I was having some mechanical problems with the car.”
Sanders said as she was driving on U.S. 31 Tuesday morning the car she was driving began to shake causing her to veer from her lane of travel.
“The car started shaking and it shook me into the other lane,” Sanders said. “I knew I wasn’t supposed to be in that lane, but I couldn’t stop it. I tried to get back between the cars but I couldn’t.”
Sanders said she was on her way to class at Faulkner State Community College where she is a student when the crash occurred.
“It all happened so fast,” Sanders said. “Her car was coming and it just happened so fast. I was panicking and was hoping we would miss each other.”
My car twisted in the road and came to a stop. Her car hit the side of my car after it had come to a stop.”
Although Sanders was airlifted to a Mobile healthcare facility, her injuries turned out to be minor.
“I was in so much pain they took me by helicopter to Mobile,” Sanders said. “The next thing I remember I woke up in the hospital. I don’t have any broken bones, just a couple of fractures and some scratches and bruises.”
Sanders said her injuries were minor and she expected to return to work within a couple of days.
The accident also injured Faye Odom, the driver of a Chevy Equinox. Attempts to reach Odom for an update on her condition were unsuccessful.
Several witnesses came to the aid of the two injured drivers immediately after the crash.
Orlando Frye and Larry Bailey were traveling south along U.S. 31 with Sanders following behind them when the crash occurred.
Frye said he knew the crash was inevitable when he saw Sanders’ car move into the oncoming lane.
“We were headed south and the red car (driving by Sanders) was behind us,” Frye said Tuesday. “She began to pass and I could see the other vehicle coming. I told Larry, ‘this is it,’ because I knew they were going to hit.”
Bailey, Frye’s passenger, said when the impact occurred he made the call to 911 to summon help.
“I called 911 as soon as I could,” Bailey said Tuesday. “We turned around and went back to help.”
Alabama State Trooper Jimmy Dean responded to the scene. No final report on the investigation conducted by Dean has been made available.
