Bargain shoppers will no longer have to make a second trip to the grocery store to pick up a six-pack or bottle of wine.
The Atmore City Council OK’d Dollar General’s request Monday afternoon for an off premises retail beer and off premises retail table wine license for its location at 609 E. Church Street across from the Atmore Plaza shopping center.
“I don’t see any reason from the state not to award it,” Atmore Mayor Howard Shell said.
Dollar General management provided a State of Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board application to the council with confirmation of application and payment of $525 in fees, including a $50 county fee and a $150 state fee for the retail beer license and a $75 county fee and a $150 state fee for the retail table wine license and a $100 application fee.
The council unanimously approved the discount retailer’s request.
The approval followed the council’s passing of Ordinance No. 07-2011, which brought the City of Atmore in compliance with provisions set forth by the State of Alabama relating to the sale of alcoholic beverages. Some of the provisions or their enforcement were enacted in 1942, according to the ordinance.
Sections repealed included those relating to the purchase, possession or consumption by minors; sale or delivery to or purchased for minors; misrepresentations of age of minor for purpose of obtaining alcohol and sale of malt beverages prohibited between certain hours.
In other business, the council:
• approved a resolution supporting Congressional funding for the Community Agency of Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Monroe and Conecuh counties
• signed a proclamation designating May 1 as Law Day in the City of Atmore joining the United States of America and the State of Alabama
• reappointed Atmore Utilities Board manager Tom Wolfe as chairman of the Planning Commission for a four-year term and realtor Debbie Rowell as a board member
• appointed Brenda Watkins to the Planning Commission
• appointed Robert White to the Board of Adjustments
