A Jay, Fla., man was found guilty of second-degree murder Wednesday in the 2010 shooting death of a Brewton teenager.

Robert Floyd, 21, faces up to life in prison following the jury’s decision, according to the Pensacola News Journal. The case — involving a white shooter and black victim — raised racial tension at the time of the incident.

Floyd shot and killed Getyron “Gus” Benjamin as the teenager was riding in a car departing from a party at Floyd’s house on Feb. 27, 2010.

Floyd’s attorney argued that the Jay man was acting in self-defense. The driver of the car Benjamin was riding in did not admit to prosecutors until a few weeks ago that he had shot a gun from his car that same night.

Witnesses at the party had different accounts as to who shot first. The exchange of gunfire came after an altercation at the party between Benjamin and Gerald Banton — the only two black people at the party — and Floyd and another man. Banton told jurors during the trial that he showed a gun after Floyd initiated the fight, but that the group was driving away when Floyd began shooting at the car with a rifle.

According to a 911 tape played during the trial, Floyd called police when word came back to the party that someone in the car had been shot. Floyd told the 911 operator, “This is a white predominant town.”
