An Alabama death row inmate died Tuesday morning in what prison officials are calling an apparent suicide.
William A. Snyder, 48, died in his cell at Holman Correctional Facility located just of Alabama 21 north of Atmore.
A press release from officials with the Alabama Department of Corrections did not give the cause of death but stated that the incident remains under investigation by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
Snyder was convicted on charges of capital murder and was sentenced to death in an April 7, 2000 case out of Talladega County. He had served just over 11 years on death row.
Snyder was convicted of beating 72-year-old Dixie Gaither and her son, Carey Milton Gaither, 45, to death as he burglarized their home in 1996. He then reportedly used a handgun found at the Gaither home to kill Nancy Burkhalter, Carey Gaither’s girlfriend at the time of the murders.
Snyder was tried and convicted of three counts of capital murder and he was subsequently sentenced to death.
The state court of criminal appeals reversed the conviction of Snyder in 2001. In a later decision, the state Supreme Court restored the original verdict and sentence against Snyder.
