Escambia County cheer tryouts to be held

After it was determined last month that cheerleaders from tryouts in May were ineligible to cheer due to violation of a county policy, some wondered whether there would any cheerleaders at Escambia County High School for the 2011-12 school year.

That question was answered as the school released a date for a new tryout to be held next week at ECHS.

A cheer clinic will be held on Monday through Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. each day.

The tryout, which includes cheerleaders for ECHS and ECMS will be held in the old gym at ECHS on Thursday, Aug. 11 beginning at 3 p.m.

With the tryout approaching quickly, any girl trying out needs to be ready to follow all rules, ECHS cheer sponsor Toni Rogers said.

“The girls are expected to follow all guidelines as they are outlined in the county policy,” she said. “Additionally, it is imperative that they always present themselves in a respectable manner. They serve as representatives of the school, in addition to the community; they should carry themselves as such.”

The new squad will feature 10 to 15 girls, Rogers said.

To make the squad, any girl interested in trying out will need to perform things they learn and prove their ability of execution, Roger said.

“Tryouts will consist of three days of clinics where they will learn a cheer, a dance and two chants,” she said. “Girls will be judged on their ability to execute the things they learn, as well as their tumbling ability.”

Along with the physical aspect needed to become a cheerleader, Rogers will be looking for different features from the girls.

Attitudes and school spirit will be key factors in the decision made for the squad, she said.

“I will be looking for positive attitudes, cheer experience and above all that Blue Devil Pride,” she said.

When the tryout begins next week, the cheerleaders must be prepared to show all they’ve got.

Being prepared is something that Rogers wants each girl to take into account for the tryout, she said.

The girls should come prepared for the clinics.,” she said. “This includes being dressed appropriately (shorts, tee shirt, tennis shoes), water, their physical and the $25 tryout fee. They should also come ready to work hard and have fun.”

Before trying out each student is required to take a physical.
