A former Northview High School student will remain in the Escambia County Jail in Pensacola following a ruling that her bond will not be lowered.

Circuit Judge Nickolas Geeker ruled Wednesday that bond for Elena Janelle Rendell will remain set at $300,000.

Rendell, 17, was charged as an adult with manslaughter with a firearm in August after she allegedly killed her 14-year old adoptive sister, Christina Marie Sneary, with her father’s 9 mm handgun at their home in Ferry Pass.

According to officials with the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Department, Rendell first told officers responding to the scene she had accidentally shot Sneary while trying to fire at a black male who had broken into their home.

Authorities said Rendell changed her story after further questioning and told officers the gun had gone off while she and her sister were playing with the weapon. Rendell later admitted to officers she shot Sneary in the neck during an argument between the two girls over a cell phone.
