A kitchen worker at Holman Prison was arrested over the weekend after she was allegedly caught engaging in sexual intercourse with an inmate, prison officials said.
Carolyn Burns, 53, was taken into custody by the Investigations and Intelligence division of the ADOC Saturday night after being found by a Holman officer having sex with an inmate in a closet located in the prison’s kitchen area, Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett said.
“We had an officer who witnessed part of the incident,” Corbett said.
Burns, who has been employed at Holman since August 2010, was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton. She was released Monday on $10,000 bond and has since chosen to resign from her position.
Corbett said it has not been determined if Burns and the inmate had been carrying out an extended relationship or if Saturday’s incident was the first of its kind.
According to Alabama law, the inmate in question is considered to be the victim in a case such as this Corbett said.
Burns has been charged sexual custodial misconduct.
