Jeanette McGlasker Green

ATMORE – Jeanette Eloise McGlasker Green was born to the late Alfred and Alice Ida (MacMillan) McGlasker, on Aug. 4, 1919, and was educated at the Escambia County Training School. Jeanette was an accomplished pianist and loved life, laughter and family fun.
Jeanette moved to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and then to New York City, New York, in search of employment when she was still a teen. She lived in the northeast for over 40 years, working in unique and interesting positions such as house manager for Morton Wishengrad, playwright, and office personnel of Family Circle Magazine.
Upon retirement, she returned home to take care of her mother and become an active member in Atmore’s social and civic life. A faithful member of Gaines Chapel, the Atmore Garden Club, the Voting Registration Board, and the Atmore Housing Authority Board, Jeanette spent countless hours giving of her time and resources for the betterment of the Atmore community. In recognition of her unstinting contributions to Atmore, Jeanette was awarded the Key to the City of Atmore by Mayor Howard Shell in 2010.
Jeanette, the youngest sibling of the late Prince Augustus McGlasker and Ivy Lee McGlasker (deceased), is survived by her four children and their spouses – Alfred Don Alzo McGlasker and Antoinette, Ruth Alice O’Connor and Jacob, Edna Marie Johnson, and Constance Elaine Chambers. Jeanette was a loving grandmother to her grandchildren and their spouses, her great-grandchildren, and her great-great grandson. Jeanette will be missed by a host of friends, family, and community members as well.
The celebration of Jeanette McGlasker Green’s life will be preceded by a wake on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at the Mayberry Funeral Home Chapel at 149 Carver Avenue, Atmore, Alabama 36502 (251 368 4525), from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The funeral will take place on Friday, Oct. 29, 2011, at 11 a.m., at Gaines Chapel AME Church, 122 Carver Avenue, Atmore, Alabama 36502. Interment will take place at Stallworth Cemetery, Harris Street, Atmore, Alabama.
