Officials in Atmore and Poarch are preparing this week to dedicate the new Atmore/PCI animal shelter on Cindebrand Road just off Highway 31 in Atmore.

The joint effort to run an animal shelter in town comes only months after the Humane Society of Escambia County pulled out of Atmore due to funding problems. Several months later the HSEC also pulled out of Brewton following similar issues. That is when community leaders in Atmore and Poarch decided the best option for controlling stray animals and caring for abused animals would be to band together to form a joint shelter on the west end of Escambia County.

HSEC Shelter Director Renee Jones said the organization will continue to perform their functions until Dec. 31 since the county has pre paid through the end of the year.

Following the announcement of the new shelter in Atmore, Mayor Howard Shell said the new partnership would perform the same functions the HSEC once did.

“We’ll do whatever is necessary to get (the animals) picked up and cleaned up,” he said. “We’ll have adoptions for people who would like to adopt them.”

The ribbon cutting for the new shelter is scheduled to be held Monday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. The pub
