Blue Devils beat Spartans 56-47

Escambia County High School improved its area record to 3-0 last Friday with a victory over the Saraland Spartans in Saraland.
The Blue Devils (15-4, 3-0), who are currently on a 14-game winning streak, defeated the hosting Spartans 56-47.
In a game that featured the apparent favorites for the area title, ECHS controlled the tempo of the game never giving Saraland any room to make a big run.
In the first quarter, the Blue Devils overmatched the Spartans with their offense and defense as they pulled out to a 17-13 lead.
Escambia County increased their lead in the second period as they went on a 16-10 run in the quarter to roll into halftime with a 10-point lead.
Following halftime, the teams battled to the end of the game switching runs as ECHS never let Saraland back into the game.
Saraland won the third quarter as they closed the game on the Blue Devils’ lead outscoring ECHS 12-8.
With a 41-35 lead, the Blue Devils made the most of their scoring opportunities to stay on top of the the Spartans as they finished the game with a 15-2 run to win 56-47.
With the win behind his team, Blue Devils head basketball coach Anthony Hayes said his team felt in they had the upperhand against Saraland.
“We felt good during the entire game,” he said. “Even when they went on a run, we never felt like the game was out of control. It’s a good win for us, especially with two weeks left in the season.”
Blue Devils Fred Knight and Dalvin Craft led their team with 15 points each in the victory. Knight finished with five rebounds and one steal, while Craft posted four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Desmond Williams had 10 points in the victory for ECHS and also recorded five rebounds and three blocks.
Blue Devil Darious Pettway chipped in nine points for the Blue Devils to go along with four rebounds and three steals.
Desmond Johnson, Tyrell Ford and Tony McAroy rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The Blue Devils next game will be Thursday at home against Northview. Games begin at 4:30 p.m.
ECHS JV 61
Saraland JV 55
Escambia County High School’s Blue Devils junior varsity squad overcame a 14-point deficit last Friday against the Saraland Spartans to win 61-55 in Saraland.
The Blue Devils (8-4) fell behind early in the first quarter and fought back for the next three periods to earn the road win.
In the first quarter, the Spartans dominated both ends of the court as they outscored ECHS 16-2.
Escambia County began battling back in the second quarter as they outscored the Spartans 13-11. At halftime, Saraland led 27-15.
Following the half, it was all Blue Devils as they continued the run they began in the second period.
In the third quarter, ECHS pounced on the momentum and ran with it as they won the period 21-11 to cut into the Spartans’ 15-point lead.
Trailing 38-36, the Blue Devils put together one final run scoring 23 points and holding the Spartans to 19 as they escaped the contest with a 61-57 comeback victory.
Jarvis Knight the Blue Devils to the victory scoring 18 points in the match up.
Devontae Walker chipped in nine points for ECHS, while Garrett Jackson scored eight and Darius McCarthy added seven.
Akeem Grey, Jerome Webster and D’Andre Lambert all scored four points in the win for ECHS.
Kevin Osuala (two points), Demetree Marion (two points) and Josh Hill rounded out the scoring for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils next game will be Thursday at home against Northview. Games begin at 4:30 p.m.
