Lady Blue Devils advance to Area 1 championship

Escambia County’s Lady Blue Devils are guaranteed a spot in the subregionals after winning their opening game of the Class 4A Area 1 Tournament Thursday night.

The Lady Blue Devils (20-4, 4-2) played the Saraland Lady Spartans at UMS-Wright and came away with a dominating 48-25 victory.
It was a close contest for the first three quarters with ECHS leading by five heading to the fourth quarter.

In the first period, the Lady Blue Devils made more of their scoring opportunities taking an 11-8 lead.

Atmore pushed their lead to four points in the second quarter outscoring the Lady Spartans 9-8 to roll into halftime leading 20-16.
Following the break, the Lady Blue Devils picked up their pace and pulled away for good in the fourth period.

Escambia County extended their lead again in the third period creating an advantage of five points, as they outscored Saraland 8-7.

Leading 28-23 moving into the final quarter, Escambia County ran away with the contest in the fourth period going on a 20-2 run in the final eight minutes.

The Lady Blue Devils were paced in the game by Diamond Williams and Jasmine Ireland. Williams finished the win with 22 points, while Ireland posted 12.

Lady Blue Brianna Martin added seven points, while Nicole Johnson chipped in six points.

The Lady Blue Devils will now face the UMS-Wright Lady Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs defeated the B.C. Rain Lady Red Raiders 66-47 on Thursday night.

Earlier in area play, the Lady Blue Devils and Lady Bulldogs split their match ups with each team winning at home.

In the first match up, Escambia County defeated UMS-Wright    38-30 in Atmore, while UMS-Wright won the next contest 52-35 in Mobile.
