Drug busts continue in Atmore

The string of drug-related busts in Atmore continued Sunday morning with the arrest of an Atlanta man for possession of marijuana.
Shannon Wayne Trawick, 23, was taken into custody early Sunday after Atmore police officers and agents with the 21st Judicial Drug Task Force responded to a domestic dispute around 4:30 a.m. at the Hampton Inn on U.S. 21.
DTF agent Scott Walden said he suspected drugs were involved after observing several suspicious items in the couples’ hotel room, including “blunts” and loose tobacco.
After questioning both individuals separately, Walden said gaps in their stories, coupled with an odd amount of cash, the source of which could not be verified, led him to ask Trawick for permission to search a vehicle he said was rented in Atlanta specifically for a trip to Atmore’s Wind Creek Casino and Hotel. Walden said Trawick would not give consent and the K-9 unit from Fountain Correctional Facility was subsequently called to the scene.
Walden said a dog “alerted” on the trunk of Trawick’s vehicle where officers found approximately 2 grams of marijuana in a hidden compartment inside a Coca-Cola can.
Walden said K-9 unit dogs also alerted on the fender well of a police cruiser where officers had placed Trawick’s cash.
“That is an indication of drug scent transferred from drugs to cash,” Walden said.
Officers seized a total of $4,152 along with the marijuana.
Walden said, considering the going rate for marijuana is around $1,000 per pound, he has reason to believe Trawick may have “possibly been in Atmore to make a marijuana drop.”
Trawick was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and taken to the Atmore city jail.
The arrest makes the 26th drug bust in Atmore in 2012.
