The Atmore Utilities Flames kicked off the Atmore Babe Ruth Softball season on a high note with a 12-5 victory over the United Bank Silver Eagles on Monday.
The Flames fought off a 3-1 deficit in the bottom of the second inning to rally and never looked back after taking the lead.
Two runs in the top of the first helped the Silver Eagles open the game strong, as Mary Thompson Lancaster (2-for-2, 3R) and Savannah Tingle (0-for-0, R) crossed the plate to give their team a 2-0 lead.
Zydaja Brown (0-for-0, 3R) used her speed to work around the base path in the bottom of the first to pull the Flames within one run.
Lancaster picked up her second hit of the game in the top of the second and also scored her second run of the game to put the Silver Eagles out in front 3-1.
The Flames found success in the bottom of the inning scoring six runs courtesy of Anna Lisa Boatwright (0-for-1, R) Olivia Simmons (0-for-0, 2R), Abby Smith (2-for-2, 2B, 2R, RBI), Nina Wiggins (1-for-1, R), Brown and Sara Rolin (1-for-2, 2R, RBI).
Trailing 7-3, the Silver Eagles added a run in the top of the third inning with Suzanne Etheridge (1-for-2, R) hitting a single and scoring on a fielder’s choice by Tori Smith (0-for-2, RBI) to cut the Flames’ lead to three runs.
The Flames made the most of their final at-bat in the bottom of the third scoring five more runs with Smith, Skyler Riley (0-for-0, R), Rolin and Natasha Walker (1-for-1, R, RBI) crossing the plate to give their team a 12-5 edge.
Lancaster scored her third run of the game in the top of the fourth, but that would be the only run her team would get in their last turn at the plate to put the final score at 12-5.
