A student at Huxford Elementary School was taken into custody by an Escambia County Sheriff’s deputy Friday afternoon during the school’s annual field day event after school officials found the juvenile with what they believed to be a small amount of marijuana.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said the Sheriff’s Department received a call reporting the incident and a deputy and an officer with juvenile services were dispatched to the school.

Escambia County Superintendent Randall Little said HES officials followed Board of Education policy, immediately reporting the incident.

“Mr. Sheehan informed me immediately,” Little said. “And board policy was adhered to. The student’s parents were notified and guidelines will be followed. In this case it will be an immediate five-day suspension from school and then to determine if the juvenile will be put in an alternative school setting, but the student’s education will not be interrupted because of this.”

The student was transported to the Baldwin County Juvenile Detention Center in Bay Minette.
