Bradley Byrne is the new U.S. representative for Alabama’s 1st Congressional District, which includes Escambia County.

The Republican Byrne defeated Democratic candidate Burton LeFlore in the overall election, although the final voting totals were not available at press time. The Associated Press called the race for Byrne at 9:02 p.m. At that time, Byrne had 65.55 percent of the vote in the district, with 51 percent of precincts reporting.

Byrne, a former state senator and Republican candidate for governor, was also on pace to win every county in the district except for Mobile County.

Byrne won the Escambia County electorate’s vote by a hefty margin, according to unofficial vote results. He finished with 1,658 votes, compared to LeFlore’s 536, giving Byrne 75.57 percent of the county’s total.

Byrne will complete the term of former U.S. Congressman Jo Bonner, who resigned from the seat in August. Byrne will then face a re-election bid in November 2014.
