Inmate to be executed

Christopher Eugene Brooks, 44, will be executed by lethal injection at Holman Correctional Facility tomorrow night, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Brooks was convicted in the 1992 murder and rape of Jo Deann Campbell in Homewood.
According to reports, Brooks’ attorneys asked last week for an emergency stay of his execution until there is a decision on litigation challenging Alabama’s new lethal injection code. The Alabama Supreme Court denied his request.
In Brooks’ motion, which was denied, he claims the use of midazolam is unconstitutional, according to reports.
Under the new lethal injection code, the condemned will be administered three drugs — midazolam hydrochloride, rocuronium bromide and potassium chloride — separately and in order.
The use of midazolam hydrochloride has been questioned since an Oklahoma death row inmate — Clayton Lockett — appeared to have woken up after being administered the sedative and after the second and third drugs had been administered. According to reports, Oklahoma officials said an improper IV hook up was to blame.
This will be the first execution at the prison since July 2013.
The execution will take place at 6 p.m. CST tomorrow.
