Council recognizes Boys, Girls state students

The Atmore City Council recognized the Atmore American Legion 2016 Boys and Girls State candidates from area high schools at its meeting Monday.

Alabama’s boys and girls state will be held at the University of Alabama in late May and early June. The boys attend from May 29-June 4, and the girls attend from June 5-10.

Northview junior Zachary Sheldon will be attending boys state in Florida at Tallahassee from June 19-25.

Those participating in boys and girls state include: Brent Hollington, Flomaton High School; Gage Hagan, FHS; Eli Godwin, Escambia Academy; David Dobson, EA; Gary Campbell, EA; Derik Kidd, Escambia County High School; Anthony Beckham, ECHS; Sheldon; Kaylee Padgett, FHS; Ariel Whatley, ECHS; and Bailey Lancaster, EA.

In other business, the council:

• approved the airport safety plan for this year;

• approved a resolution to include the city’s support for the return of passenger rail service in a report to be filed to Congress;

• approved a proclamation naming Thurs., May 5, as the National Day of Prayer for the city of Atmore; and,

• renewed board appointments for Tommy Moore on the industrial development board, W.J. Grissett and Joe Brown on the planning commission, and Jimmy Beck, Voncille Stallworth and Chapman Maxwell on the board of zoning adjustment.
