Lou Vickery and Ken Barnett are the last two of six inductees in the 2016 class of the Atmore Area Hall of Fame.

In the weeks leading up to the HOF banquet, which will be held Sat., April 30, at 6 p.m. at The Club, The Atmore Advance has featured each of the inductees.

The other inductees include: Curtis Harris, Danny Sanspree, Hope Zenah and John Garrad.

 

Lou Vickery

Vickery was a former professional baseball player. Upon graduation from Escambia County High School, Vickery signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, and over a 10-year career, Vickery played for the New York Yankees and coached in the Cincinnati Reds organization.

Vickery received his bachelor’s degree from Troy University after his baseball career. He coached at Troy and then spent four years with Merrill Lynch as an account executive. Vickery then went into the training and development field with Pat Ryan and Associates of Chicago, Ill., in 1974. Afterward, he did contract training for numerous national organizations, and over a 30-year period, he worked with more than 2,800 companies in 44 states and two foreign countries.

Vickery has authored 12 books, which include “A Touch of Gray,” “Charlie Gets Another Puppy,” “Notes From God,” and “The Rise of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

Vickery has been a radio talk show has for the past 11 years, hosting his show “Lou in the Morning,” which airs on WPFL-FM, 105.1.

Vickery is a retired member of the National Speakers Association, Society of Professional Trainers, past president of the Atmore Rotary Club and retired chairman of the Atmore Area Hall of Fame.

Vickery has two sons, Lance and Kevin; two step-daughters, Shannon and Amanda; one step-son, Leland; two grandsons, Drew and Max; and two step-grandchildren, Harper and Ryder.

Vickery and his wife, Dana, reside in Gulf Shores, where Vickery plays tennis three to four days a week. He is captain of the defending state champion Lower Alabama Senior Combo Tennis Team that competed against other teams in the state.
