Billiot threw shotgun off Highway 4 bridge

A Flomaton man was arrested for shooting a Canoe man last week, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

According to an ECSO press release, the sheriff’s office received a call from the Atmore Police Department on the evening of May 10, in reference to a male subject being shot at a trailer park on Highway 31 in Canoe.

“The victim had a severe gunshot wound to the arm,” ECSO Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said.

The victim was transported by personal vehicle to Atmore Community Hospital before being transferred to a trauma center in Mobile for further treatment, where he remains.

The ECSO said the shooting was the result of an ongoing domestic situation.

Deputies and investigators responded to the scene and determined from statements of witnesses that the suspect, Steven Billiot (age 21), of 169 Hollywood Drive in Flomaton, fled the scene, Lambert said.

Investigators worked through the night and into the next day with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Office and the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect was located in Jay, Fla., after a short foot pursuit.

Billiot was taken into custody and transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail, where he awaited extradition back to Alabama.

Additionally, Billiot has an outstanding warrant for attempted murder.

Two days after the shooting, Billiot told authorities that on Wednesday, he tossed the shotgun allegedly used in the shooting off of the Highway 4 bridge between Century and Jay.

Last Thursday, multiple law enforcement agencies from Florida and Alabama began searching for the weapon in the river.
