2 elected to tribal council

Gehman, Meckel in run-off

Dewitt Carter won the at large spot by a landslide in the 2016 Tribal Council Election of the Poarch Creek Indians on Sat., June 4.

Carter garnered 406 total votes in the election. His walk in total was 164, and he added 144 absentee ballots to put him above the rest.

Eddie Leon Tullis won the treasurer’s election with 773 total votes cast.

Tullis gained 349 walk-in votes, 145 absentee votes and 279 votes the day of the election.

There will be a run-off for the office of secretary, as incumbent David Gehman will face Charlotte “McGhee” Meckel on Aug. 6, 2016.

Gehman got 424 votes compared to Meckel’s 407.

There were a total of 1,343 General Council members who voted in the election. There were 263 absentee ballots and 601 walk-in ballots counted, and there were 479 General Council members who voted in person on election day.
