Atmore’s 13-to-15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars are vying for a state championship today as they are playing Sylacauga in the tournament semifinals.

During pool play action over the weekend, the local team beat Tallassee 7-6; Wetumpka 8-1; and West Alabama 11-10.

Coach Robert Cash said the boys are playing as a team.

“The chemistry of this team is probably the best of any team I’ve coached,” Cash said. “They never get down. Against Tallassee, we had one bad inning, and that was the only bad inning we’ve had in the tournament. We had four errors and it cost us four runs.”

Cash said the errors gave Tallassee three runs. However, Atmore bounced back the next inning with five of its own.

“The team never got down,” he said. “They rebounded. That’s the way they’ve played the whole tournament. The pitchers have pitched great. We’ve hit the ball. It’s just been a good team effort.”
