CERT team restores order at Holman; prison remains on lockdown

Order was restored hours after an altercation between inmates occurred inside one of the dorms in the William C. Holman Correctional Facility Monday afternoon.

According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, the dorm was secured after a Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) entered the dorm at 9:45 p.m. Monday without meeting any resistance from the inmates, six hours after some inmates received stab wounds from a fight.

“Inmates were cooperative and the situation was resolved without the use of force or further incident,” ADOC Public Information Manager Bob Horton said. “The prison was placed on lockdown earlier (Monday afternoon) following an altercation between a group of inmates housed in the dorm.”

Horton said initial reports indicate that four inmates were involved in the altercation.

“In an updated report, officials say only three inmates were involved in the incident and confirmed all three received stab wounds in the altercation,” he said. “The inmates were treated onsite for non-life threating injuries.”

Horton said the incident escalated when several inmates inside the dorm became aggressive toward the correctional officers who were responding to the altercation.

“As a precaution, the officers secured the door to the dorm area and waited for backup from the CERT team,” he said. “The facility is reporting some damage inside the dorm area caused by a fire the inmates had started during the disturbance. Other areas of the prison were not affected.”

The ADOC is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident, Horton said.

The prison will remain on lockdown until the investigation is complete.
