Barbara Ann Guthrie

Mrs. Barbara Ann Guthrie, 71, passed away on Sat., Aug. 20, 2016, in Atmore.

She was a native of Ashford, Wisc., and a resident of Atmore since 1995.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Guthrie; parents, Benno and Laurine Simon; and two brothers, Norman and Jerad Simon.

She is survived by her son, Ronald J. (Stacy) Guthrie of Cibolo, Texas; one daughter, Laurine (Jeff) Gentry of Atmore; four brothers, Phil (Diane) Simon of Fond du Lac, Wisc., Frank (Betsy) Simon of Mayville, Wisc., Tom (Sherry) Simon of Watsonville, Calif. and Bob (Debbie) Simon of Brownsville, Wisc.; four sisters, Pat Simon of Oshkosh, Wisc., Rose Simon of Zion, Ill., Lucille Simon of Israel and Clare (Nusrat) Hussain of Islip, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Billie Ruth Wilson of Atmore and Robin (Dan) O’Brian of Appleton, Wisc.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Fri., Aug. 26, 2016, at 3 p.m. from the Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Gene King officiating.

Visitation will be Aug. 26, 2016 from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be B.J. Donaldson, Marshall Hadley, Jason Hadley, Nathan Riley, Christopher Hadley and Luke Hadley.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family.

Chris Lamar Dempsey

Chris Lamar Dempsey, 60, of Atmore, passed away on Tues., Aug. 16, 2016 in Mobile.

He was a painter for A to Z Handyman, born on March 8, 1956, in Atlanta, Ga., to the late Peter Bartlett and Edna Sisk Dempsey Jr. He was affiliated with Atmore First Assembly of God.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Myra Alexander; and a brother, Randy Dempsey.

Survivors are his wife, Tina Dobson Dempsey of Atmore; six sons, Greg (Dori) Glawson

of Buford, Ga., Stephen Dempsey, Hody (Jennifer) Dempsey, Dusty (Marla) Dempsey, all of

Tuscaloosa, and Sammy LePone and Joey LePone, both of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Shannon (Randy) Taylor and Samantha Croker, both of Atmore; one brother, Darrell (Margaret) Pugh of Franklin, Ga.; two sisters, Velvarae Oglesby and Roxanne (Jim) Shifflet, both of Atmore; 12 grandchildren, Mackenzie and Cope Dempsey, Luke and Natalie Dempsey, Brandon Glawson, Daniel, Jon Michael and Memphis Croker, Dustin Chambers Jr.,

Mason and Caleb Taylor and Sophia LePone; nieces and nephews, Kevin, Rusty, Connie,

Sandy, Marie, Douglas, Kenneth, Thomas, Rebecca, Crystal, Eric, Leta, Patricia, Rose, Alesha,

Cory, Toni, Michael, Amber, Daniel, Emily, John Chandler and a multitude of friends in Atlanta, and Destin, Fla.

Donna Mae Messer

Donna Mae Messer, 53, of Atmore, passed away on Wed., Aug. 17, 2016, in Atmore.

She was a homemaker, born in Atmore on Feb. 16, 1963, to the late George M. and Juanita Presley Messer. She was of the Baptist faith.

She is preceded in death by a brother, Lem Messer.

Survivors are four brothers, John R. (Peggy) James of Atmore, Raymond Lee Messer, Michael Wayne (Kathy) Messer and Glen Thomas (Vickie) Messer, all of Rome, Ala.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial services were held Aug. 19, 2016, from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel.

Fred Lee Presley

Mr. Fred Lee Presley, born Feb. 11, 1934, to Johnnie A. and Emma Eddins Presley, passed at the age of 82, into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thurs., Aug. 18, 2016.

He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Johnnie A. and Emma Eddins Presley; stepmother, Cleo Presley; stepsister, Linda Cody; three brothers, James “Snooks” Presley, J.D. Presley and Preston McGhee; a brother-in-law, Drew Stewart; and three nephews, Danny Presley, Michael Presley and Terry Lassitter.

He is survived by two sisters, Mildred Presley Stewart of Perdido, Joyce (Woody) Presley Lassitter of Maysville, N.C.; three daughters (Daddy’s girls), Anita Carol Presley and Judy Marie Presley-Penton of Pensacola, Fla. and ReGina Gayle Presley-Bryan (Robert) of Pace Fla.; four grandchildren, Brian David Malone, Taylor Matthew Edwards, Christina Presley Bryan and David Presley Bryan; seven great-grandchildren, Garrett Malone, Mariah Nicole Edwards, Taylee Sue Edwards, Avery Isles Edwards, Jordan Malone, Micheal Malone and Caleb Malone; along with a host of close nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was a man of action, duty, character and was extremely compassionate. He could always be found helping others and offering an encouraging word. He never met a stranger and made lending a hand to those in need a big priority in his life. He would give the shirt off his back and often did without a second thought. Fred was a Christian and a strong man of faith and fervent prayer. He loved to sing hymns and would often be found humming and singing throughout the day.

He was an extremely hard worker and was rich in wisdom.

A handshake and a promise was as good as gold in his life. His dedication and work ethic led him to a very effective career as a chemical operator. He retired from Reichold Chemical Company after serving an estimated 40 years of service. He also owned Presley Mobile Home Park in Atmore and spent many years in property management purchasing and leasing farm land and houses in Florida and Alabama.

His hobbies were playing basketball (especially during his school age years), farming, fishing (oh, how he loved to fish), and working on things that were broken. Whether is was a piece of farm equipment, a vehicle or a dilapidated home, Fred loved taking things that were discarded and broken to bring them back to their full purpose.

He loved and adored his daughters and family while remaining extremely close to his brothers and sisters and their families. No one was a distant relative in his book.

His Celebration Of Life Service will be held tomorrow, Thurs., Aug. 25, 2016, at 2 p.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel, 1322 South Main Street, Atmore with his daughter, the Rev. Regina Presley Bryan officiating. Interment will follow in Presley Family Cemetery, 60590 Milstead Road, Atmore.

Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore.

Robert B. “Bobby” Woods Jr.

Robert B. “Bobby” Woods Jr., 73, of Atmore, passed away on Tues., Aug.16, 2016, in Atmore.

He was a retired chemical control operator and Fire Medic with Monsanto after 40 years of service. He was born in Escambia County on Nov. 26, 1942, to the late Robert B. and Vella Greek Woods Sr.

He is preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick Ryan Burkett.

Survivors are one son, Marshall Robert (Sabrina) Woods of Vernon, Fla.; two daughters,

Suzanne (John) Sirmon and Blair (Mark) Burkett, all of Atmore; grandchildren, Daniel, Shaun, Justin, Wesley, Erin, Marshall, Houston, Saylor and Eldon; and five great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his family, friends and special cousins, Harold Allen and JoAnne

Cooper.

Services were held Aug. 23, 2016 from the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Debora bishop officiating. Interment followed in Mothershed Cemetery.

Active Pallbearers were Wesley Sirmon, Justin Emmons, Marshall Burkett, Shane Cooper, Dennis Biggs and Rodney Biggs.
