Questions are still being answered as to who will be the start at quarterback and on the offensive and defensive lines as Escambia County visits Wilcox Central for its regular season opener this week.

The Blue Devils are coming off a 42-6 preseason game loss to Citronelle. The junior varsity squad scored the only touchdown for ECHS.

Blue Devils head football coach Royce Young said Wilcox is a team that ECHS hasn’t played before, and hopefully film study will help.

“We know they’ll have athletes,” he said. “Traditionally, they’ll have athletes and speed.”

When asked what the coaching staff learned from the preseason loss, Young said they were both surprised and unsurprised with how the team played.

“One thing we expected and will be the case every week is that we were physically smaller than Citronelle, and we had less numbers,” he said. “The one thing we didn’t expect was for our players to play timid early on. I guess it was nerves.”

Young said the Blue Devils started a lot of young guys, and everyone got the chance to play, however.

“We thought we would compete more than we did,” he said.

Young said the most disappointing aspect of the game was the quarterback and line play.

Kick off Friday night is at 7 in Camden.
