There was a packed house inside of Escambia County High School’s culinary arts classroom last Wednesday for the Breakfast with an Elected Official event.

The breakfast event has been held since May to help the community get to know the county’s elected officials, and what they do on a daily basis.

Atmore Mayor Jim Staff was the elected official for the event, which had 49 guests in attendance.

In fact, attendance was a big topic of conversation, among others, during the breakfast that ECHS culinary arts students prepared.

“Escambia County High has a 95 percent attendance rate,” Staff said. “Attendance has sored in the last few years.”

ECHS Principal Dennis Fuqua said the school is open for all students.

“We take kids other schools don’t want to take,” he said.

Escambia County Schools Assistant Superintendent Beth Drew updated the crowd on the many programs going on at Atmore schools, including A.C. Moore’s state-funded Pre-K program; Escambia County Middle’s new principal’s work; and the Star Program at ECHS, among others.

Staff said he learned one lesson about doing good work.

“I was taught to be on time, do what you’re supposed to do and leave 30 minutes behind,” he said.
