Less than a week after having to forfeit its game against Maplesville, Northview is moving on to Liberty County, Fla.

Late in the third quarter against MHS and trailing 21-0, the Chiefs forfeit their game and headed to Bratt. According to reports, head football coach Derek Marshman was ejected after a second unsportsmanlike penalty.

Marshman said Sunday that it was long after he was in the visitors’ locker room when things got escalated, adding that it got 10 times worse.

In fact, NHS Principal Gayle Weaver made the decision to forfeit the game, a decision the school’s quarterback club fully supported.

On Liberty County, Marshman said the team is a little down this year.

“Traditionally, Liberty County has been a 1A powerhouse,” he said. “When we won the state championship in 2012, they were in the Final Four.

“There’s a strong tradition in that school,” he said. “They consistently win. I know they’re young this year. They had a great team last year.”

Last year, LCHS beat NHS on homecoming, Marshman said.

Senior quarterback Alex Gonzalez is a three-year starter for the Bulldogs (1-4). Chris Williams, JJ House and Blaine Tharpe, at running back, also make up the front runners on offense.

Marshman said Tharpe is a down-hill physical guy, and House and Williams are quicker and athletic.

In addition, Javon Pride at wide receiver is a quality player, Marshman said.

After this week’s game, the Chiefs will host Jay, Fla. on Oct. 14 and then finish out district play at Baker on Oct. 28.

Marshman said it’s important for the team to pull out a win, not only for momentum, but use the game as a “springboard.”

“It’s something you can springboard into next week, and hopefully we’re going to do that,” he said.
