Driver in custody

A number of Escambia County, Fla. schools were placed on lockdown briefly this morning due to the chase of a vehicle, according to school and sheriff’s officials.

Amber Southard, public information officer with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies started following a white Dodge Charger at around 11:30 a.m. in Pensacola.

“He matched a description of a person with multiple felonies,” she said. “They went up into Baldwin County, where Baldwin County deputies pulled over a car fitting that description.”
Southard said a Roosevelt Dixon is in custody and was on his way back to Escambia County earlier this afternoon.

The charges against Dixon include grand theft, kidnapping, carjacking and grand theft auto, according to reports. He will also be charged with fleeing and eluding for Thursday’s chase.

Escambia County Schools Associate Superintendent Norm Ross said the schools were placed on lockdown for the welfare of the students.

Schools that were placed on lockdown included Bratt Elementary, Northview High School, Earnest Ward Middle School and Molino Park Elementary, Ross said.
