AFD battles 15 fires Monday; repeat offenders will get fines

Atmore fire officials said the department responded to 15 different fires from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday night.

Fire Chief Ronald Peebles said repeat offenders who set fires in their yard will be fined up to $500 and have a possible six-month stay in jail.

“These people are setting fires in there yard,” he said. “There’s a statewide burn ban.

“If I go back to the same house, I will call the Alabama Forestry Commission.”

At one such fire on Old Ship Circle, just outside of Atmore, the AFD had to use 4,500 gallons of water to extinguish the flames.
