Every year, the Mr. Football Banquet is a who’s who of high school football in Alabama.

Escambia Academy’s Trae Lee will be among those present today at the banquet, where the 2016 AISA Back/Lineman of the Year will be announced at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery.

Lee was selected as one of three lineman of the year finalists, along with Bessemer Academy’s Aaron Scroggins and Autauga Academy’s Jakerrius Wyatt.

Lee said the opportunity to be there today is great.

“First of all, I just want to thank god for giving me the opportunity to being one of the three finalists,” he said. “The other two guys are great guys, academically and athletically. I played against both earlier this year, and both are good players.”

EA played AA twice — once during the regular season and in the state championship — and BA during the regular season.

Over his senior season on the defensive line, Lee had 67 tackles, nine sacks, nine tackles for a loss, four caused fumbles, four fumbled recovers and also started as an offensive tackle and had 25 pancake blocks. He is committed to Navy.

This is the third-straight year that a Cougar has been named a finalist for back/lineman of the year. Last year, EA running back Kris Brown was up for the award, and Garrett Kirk was named in 2014.

Lee said any one of the players deserved the award.

Typically, each finalist will bring his family along with him.

Lee said he’s going to be bringing his parents, James and Jackie Lee, and his sisters, if they can attend.
