James Madison Smith

James Madison Smith, 98, of Booneville passed away Tues., Jan. 17, 2017, in Atmore.

Smith was a farmer, born in Morvin on May 17, 1918, to the late Harry Barron and Eunice Daisy Pugh Smith. He was a member of the Huxford Masonic Lodge No. 779.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Vera Mae Stafford Smith; siblings, Coleman Smith, W.B. Smith, Josephine Brogdon, Earlene Thomas, Irene Sanspree and Eunice Sizgorich.

He is survived by one son, John Madison (Glennis) Smith of Booneville; three Daughters, Frona (Albert Jr.) Venetia of Booneville, Annie Diann (Hooper,III) Matthews of Atmore and Cynthia (Bryant) McPherson of Peterman; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services were held Fri., Jan. 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. in Booneville Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. David Atchinson officiating.

Active pallbearers were Keith Smith, Richard Burgess, Joe Swain, Rusty Lassitter, Tom Dawson and Mark Burgess. Honorary pallbearers were Bruce Akins, Tom Frazier, J.P. Pipkin and Jimmy Pipkin.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Booneville Baptist Church.

Julian Howard Cole

Julian Howard Cole, 79, a resident of Atmore, passed away Thurs., Jan. 19, 2017, at his residence surrounded by family.

Cole was born March 9, 1937, to the late Grady and Eola Amos-Cole. He served as an Atmore police officer, mechanic and bus driver and retired from the Escambia County Road Commission.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, a daughter, five siblings, eight aunts and uncles and four brothers-in-law.

He is survived by his former wife, Delorise Washington Cole of Atmore; one sister, Rosie Bell Teague of Chicago; one son, Timothy Cole of Atmore; two daughters, Angelia Cole and Remonda Cole, both of Atmore; three granddaughters, Tocarra Cole, Elbony Cole and Amber Graham, all of Atmore; and two great-grandsons, Virgil People Jr. and Jaydan Peoples, both of Atmore.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sat., Jan. 28, 2017, from Mayberry Funeral Home with Michael Wilson officiating. Interment will be held in Stallworth Cemetery with Mayberry Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Repass will be held at Jimmy Wilson’s Fellowship Hall.

Joyce Cotton

Joyce Cotton, the matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Wed., Jan. 18, 2017, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Cotton was born Aug. 12, 1939, to the late Ernest and Florence Caraway Green. She was a member of Walnut Hill Baptist Church and was a born-again believer in the Lord and Savior.

She was united in marriage with John David Cotton Sr. Fri., June 13, 1958. It was a union that stood the test of time and was an example to their children and grandchildren during their 58 years together.

Along with Mr. Cotton, she is survived by her children, John Cotton Jr. (Gail), Jennifer Woodfin (Walt) and Julie Miller (Chad); grandchildren, Jonathan Cotton (Karmen), Allison Woodfin, Raeleigh Woodfin, Stewart Woodfin, John Edward Miller, Ansley Miller, Zoe Angus and Daizee Angus; great granddaughter, Kayley Cotton and sister, Bernice Smith (Clifton).

She was preceded in death by her brothers, James Colvin and Eugene and L.C. Green.

Cotton enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and was known for her signature dumplings and mashed potatoes. She looked forward to attending church on Sunday with her family and gathering around the dinner table to share good food and family time. She found great pleasure in mowing and landscaping her yard, along with fishing in the pond with her grandkids.

Funeral services were held Sat., Jan.21, 2017, from the Walnut Hill Baptist Church with The Rev. Ted Bridges officiating. Burial followed in the Walnut Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation was held Fri., Jan. 20, 2017, at the Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Jonathan Cotton, Walt Woodfin, Chad Miller, Buddy Green, John Gene Green and Michael Floyd.

Marvadeen “Deanie”

Cunningham Barrow

Mrs. Marvadeen ‘Deanie’ Cunningham Barrow, 88, of Century, Fla., passed away Wed., Jan. 18, 2017, at her home in Century.

She was born in Atmore and was a member of the Atmore community for 22 years before coming to Century in 1950. During her working years, she worked for Lakeview Center and later at the Country Bumpkin in Century. She was a member of Century First Baptist Church and served as the church secretary, clerk  and treasurer and was in charge of the nursery and children’s programs for 50 years.

She is survived by her husband, Mr. Ernest Lloyd Barrow of Century; sons, Mike (Kaye) Barrow of Mobile, Don (Kay) Barrow of Tallahassee, Fla. and Ronnie (Sheree) Barrow of Bratt, Fla.; daughter, Brenda (Eddie) Dunsford of Century; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Sat., Jan.21, 2017, at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Henry Willett, the Rev. David Boyd and the Rev. Earle Greene officiating.

Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore.

Pallbearers were Gaylan Shelly, Drew Shelly, A.J. Beachy, Frank Burnley, Jesh Barrow and Trevor Knowlton.

Shirley Jean Barnhill

Mrs. Shirley Jean Barnhill, 79, passed away Fri., Jan. 20, 2017, in Atmore.

She was a native of Flomaton and a resident of Atmore most of her life. She attended the Gospel Light Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Iva White; brother, James “Peanut” White; and step-son, Roger Barnhill.

She is survived by her husband, Dillard Barnhill of Atmore; two sons, Ronald “Rocky” Barnhill of Stockton and Michael “Mike” W. Barnhill of Atmore; three daughters, Melissa (Philip) Ellis of Flomaton, Terri (Scott) Watkins of Atmore and Madonna Barnhill of Mobile; one sister, Carol “Pug” Brantley of Flomaton; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Mickey, Jonathan, Tiffani, Ashley, Jessica and Dustin; and five great-grandsons, Karson, Kaicen, Kannon, Kendall and Tait.

Funeral services were held Tues., Jan. 24, 2017, at 11 a.m. from the Gospel Light Church with the Rev. Martin Gehman officiating.

Burial followed at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation was held Tues., Jan. 24, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. at the Gospel Light Church.

Pallbearers were David Gehman, Jerry Gehman, Kenneth Barnhill, Ricky Gibson, Clay Gibson and Clarence Rolin.

Claressa Boston

Mrs. Claressa Boston, a resident of Stockton, passed away Jan. 19, 2017.

Funeral services will be held today, Wed. Jan. 25, 2017, at 1 p.m. from The Zion Fountain AME Zion Church in Stockton with Elder Kevin Burks officiating and Pastor Sanford Davis. Interment will be held in Robinson Cemetery. Arrangements are being held by Mayberry Funeral Home.
