Atmore man arrested for drugs, gun

An Atmore man was arrested today on a trafficking and gun possession charge, according to the Atmore Police Department.

Chief Chuck Brooks said agents entered the home of Derek James Staples at 157 Harris St., where they found Staples in possession of drugs and a gun.

“Agents entered the home and found the home owner in possession of a large amount of marijuana and a hand gun,” Brooks said.

Brooks said Staples was arrested and charged with trafficking, certain person forbidden to possess a firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Narcotic agents with the APD, Poarch Creek Police Department and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office executed the drug search warrant on Staples’ home.

Staples was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center.
