Firefighters are battling a fire at Tiger Sul this morning.

Tiger Sunbelt Spokesperson Irina Kalenda said in a statement that earlier this morning, she received a phone call about a fire at the plant.

“At that time, the plant wasn’t running and no one was there,” Kalenda said. “At this time, the fire department is on site and has control.”

Kalenda said at this time, there is no way to assess the damage at the plant.

Atmore Police Chief Chuck Brooks said firefighters are concentrating on the hot spots, and it’ll take several hours to put the fire out.

Because of the fire at the chemical plant, sulfur dioxide was pouring into the air. Police and sheriff’s officials have closed Highway 31 at Industrial Park Road all the way down to James Road.

Brooks said all traffic is being diverted from the area.

Around 5:30 a.m., firefighters were called to the scene in report of black smoke billowing from the plant.

Atmore, Poarch, Nokomis, Walnut Hill, Flomaton and Century fire departments are on scene.
