A Uriah man was arrested Aug. 18 on drug charges after a traffic stop on Highway 21, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

An ECSO spokesman said Edward Rufus Baggett, 39, was arrested at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Taco Bell.

Baggett was stopped by Deputy Sam Weeks for not wearing a seatbelt. After making contact and asking for identification from Baggett, Weeks believed to have smelled an odor coming from the vehicle as that of marijuana, the spokesperson said.

Weeks then asked for consent to search the vehicle, which Baggett granted, and under the driver’s side seat, Weeks found a small black bag containing a clear glass pipe with burned residue and a small bottle containing a liquid type substance, syringes and spoons.

The ECSO spokesperson said the substance was field tested and was positive for crystal methamphetamine.

Baggett was taken into custody and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center, where he remains on a $5,000 bond.
