An elderly woman died in a structure fire on Carver Avenue early Tuesday morning, according to the Atmore Fire Department.
Fire Chief Ronald Peebles said the department was called to a structure fire at 236 Carver Ave. at 3:42 a.m.
Since there was a fatality, the fire investigation has been turned over to the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office, Peebles said.
The elderly woman’s name is being withheld until the next of kin is notified.
“There was one other person there,” Peebles said, adding that he escaped through a window.
Peebles said the house was so engulfed in flames that all the person could do was jump out the window.
“The house had flames coming out of both sides of the house,” he said.
Additionally, there were two previous calls that were related to each other, Peebles said.
Peebles said the AFD was called to a car wreck on Martin Luther King Dr. at 6:31 p.m.
“We finished up at 8:14, and a guy hit a switch poll that killed power from Carver to Robinsonville,” he said.
The AFD was then called to a structure fire — the first of the night — at 12 Old Ship Circle.
“The owner came in and lit some candles because the power was out,” Peebles said. “He went to his mom’s house and came back, and his trailer was on fire.”
Peebles said the power was out at the trailer at Old Ship Circle because of the wreck.
Peebles said the owner stated that he lit two candles, sitting one on a dress and didn’t remember to extinguish them prior to leaving for his mother’s house. The AFD cleared the scene at midnight.
Additionally, the AFD was called to Greer Avenue, where a tree fell over on a power line.
