Cherrie Bell Montgomery

Ms. Cherrie Bell Montgomery, 88, of Atmore, fell asleep in the arms of Jesus while surrounded by her family on Tues., Oct. 31, 2017, at her residence.

The Matriarch of the Montgomery family was a native of Conecuh County (Nixburg) and had been a resident of Atmore for most of her life. She was a homemaker who enjoyed growing flowers, cooking, baking and walking. She was a faithful and longtime member of Old Ship Baptist Church.

Ms. Cherrie Bell was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmison Montgomery, a daughter, Scherril Pettway; two sons, LaVon Montgomery and Curtis Montgomery; her parents, Ellen Cunningham and Orris Mallory; and two sisters, Quintella Lowe and Edna Preyear.

Those left to cherish memories of her beautiful life are four daughters, Gloria Montgomery and Dorothy Robinson, both of Atmore, Denise (Charles) Jackson of Harvest and Teresa (Ronald) Tolliver of Seattle, Wash.; three sons, Winston Montgomery, Rickey Montgomery and Derrick (Sandra) Montgomery, all of Atmore; one brother, John Henry Cunningham of Evergreen; 24 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

Celebration of life services will be held today, Wed., Nov. 8, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Old Ship Baptist Church, East Sunset Drive, Atmore, with the Rev. James Crook, pastor, officiating. Retirement of her remains will be in Fairview Cemetery with Turner Funeral Chapel LLC directing.

 

Patricia Ann Jones

Mrs. Patricia Ann Jones, 57, of Bay Minette (Pine Grove Community), answered the Master’s Call on Sat., Nov. 4, 2017, surrounded by family at her residence.

A native of Bay Minette, Patricia was a 1978 graduate of Baldwin County High School and had worked over 20 years at William F. Green Veteran’s Home in Bay Minette as a CNA. She was a member of Trinity Chapel AME Church, where she sang in the choir. In her leisure, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and the elderly, and sewing.

Those whom await her heavenly arrival are her parents, Johnnie Willie and Lydia Bell Cox; and a sister, Evelyn Cox.

Those who will forever cherish memories of her life are her husband, Lester Jones of Bay Minette; two daughters, Nikettia (Prentice) Farrington of Bay Minette and Krystal ( Conelius) Jones-Perry of Mobile; two sons, Lester (Pamela Ransom) Jones, Jr. of Decatur and Jason (DeAndrea Cooper) Jones of Gadsden; four sisters, Ethel Anderson of Dayton, Ohio, Linda Peagues and Dorothy Mae Cox, both of Oxon Hills, Md., and Linda Joyce (Sylvester) Skanes of Stockton; six brothers, William (Ernestine) Cox of Charleston, S.C., James (Michelle) Cox, Franklin Roosevelt (Shirley) Cox, and Anthony Ray (Sharon) Cox, all of Bay Minette, Johnnie (Ida) Cox of Washington, D.C., and Oliver Thomas (Heidi) Cox of Killeen, Texas; 10 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.

A celebration of life service will be held this Sat., Nov. 11, 2017, at noon at Trinity Chapel AME Church, Bay Minette, with the Rev. James Allen, pastor, officiating. Inhumation will be in Mutual Aid Cemetery. Her body will lie in repose at the church from 10 a.m. until funeral service time at the church with Turner Funeral Chapel LLC directing.

 

Arver Moorer Sr.

Deacon Arver Moorer Sr. was born on July 5, 1931, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Don and Mattie Moorer in McKinnonville, Fla. He lived in McKinnonville throughout his childhood, where he met and married his wife, Missionary Lulu Lee Moorer on Aug. 21, 1950, and to their union, six children were born.

Deacon Moorer and his wife moved to Walnut Hill, Fla., in 1965, where he resided until the Lord called him home on Sat., Oct. 28, 2017, at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.

Deacon Moorer loved his family. He provided for them as a commercial truck driver, working in the local area and later with the Town of Century, Fla., retiring in 2008. He was blessed with the gift of song and loved to sing the Gospel.

In his earlier years, he was a member of the gospel group called, The Morning Stars. The Morning Stars sang for the Lord for almost 20 years, retiring that group’s name in 1969.

Throughout his life, he served as a deacon, earlier at New Saint Paul Baptist church, later transferring his membership to the House of Prayer, both located in Walnut Hill.

Deacon Moorer was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Mattie Moorer; son, Glenn Moorer; sister, Classie (Andrew) Fountain; brothers, Deacon William C. Moorer, David (Zelma) Moorer, John D. (Ruthie Rene) Moorer, Willie (Felicia) Moorer and Walter Moorer; sister in law, Ametta Moorer; and son in law, Kevin Benjamin.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a devote and loving wife, Missionary Lulu Lee Moorer; three sons and two daughters, Arver (Missionary Barbara) Moorer Jr., Deacon Orlando (Minister Lizzie) Moorer, both of Walnut Hill, Brenda Bradley of Pensacola, Marvin Moorer of Walnut Hill and Anita Benjamin of Cantonment, Fla.; daughter in law, Christine Moorer of Cantonment; and sister in law, Flossie Moorer of Walnut Hill.

He leaves one brother, Samuel Moorer of Walnut Hill. He also leaves as a part of his legacy, 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, friends and family.

 

Gloria J. Bowen

Gloria J. Bowen, 80 of Walnut Hill, Fla., passed away on Sat., Nov. 4, 2017, at her residence.

She was a retired seamstress with Vanity Fair Mills, and was born in Monroe county on Feb. 11, 1937 to the late Mitchell Jackson and Laura Aurelia Coley Byrd. She was a member of the Nokomis Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James W. Bowen; brothers, Jack Byrd, Grady Byrd and Keith Byrd; and a sister, Bonnie Singleton.

Survivors include three sons, Richard (Christy) Bowen of Pensacola, Fla., Douglas (Mary Anne) Bowen of Walnut Hill and Robbie (Lisa) Bowen of Loxley; three sisters, Virginia Jennie (Donnie) Broxson of Milton, Fla., Sandra (John) Womack of Pensacola and Shirley (Harold) Middleton of Burley, Idaho; grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Justina, Stevie Ray, Angeline, Winter, Rhonda, BJay, Missy and Cody; 28 great-

grandchildren and one on the way; and two great-great-grandchildren

Services were held Nov. 7, 2017, from Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home Chapel.

Bro. Jim Hall and Bro. Ray Biggs officiated. Interment followed in Old Sowell Field In Monroe County. Active pallbearers were Rick Golson, Joe Hubbird, Nicholas Bowen, Stevie Ray Bowen, Joshua Horne, Jorge Escobedo, BJay Ditto and John Levins.  Honorary pallbearer was Richard Dube.

Family received friends Nov. 6, 2017 at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home, INC was in charge of all arrangements.

 

Lillie Bell Miller

Mrs. Lillie Bell Miller, 91, passed away on Sat., Nov. 4, 2017.

Mrs. Miller was born in Freemanville and was a lifelong resident of Davisville, Fla. and Atmore. She was a member of the Presley Street Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Odis E. Miller; parents, Daniel and Isabell Condrey; son, Edward Wayne Miller; four sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by one son, Thomas E. Miller (Linda) of Atmore; one daughter, Wynell M. Bell of Atmore; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held this Fri., Nov. 10, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Debora Bishop officiating.

Burial will follow at the Pinebarren Cemetery.

Visitation will be Nov. 10 from 1 p.m. until service time at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Jason Bell, Elliott Faircloth, Hunter Jernigan, Paul Luis, Blayne Miller, Christopher Miller and Wayne Miller.

Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes LLC is in charge of all arrangements in Atmore, Alabama.

 

Betty Salyer McGhee

Mrs. Betty Salyer McGhee, 77, passed away on Sat., Nov. 4, 2017, in Pensacola, Fla.

Mrs. McGhee was a native of Caretta, West Virginia and resided in Pensacola. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Lectra Salyer; and three brothers.

She is survived by her two sons, Fred Thomas (Amanda) McGhee Jr. of Atmore and Shannon “Bo” (Carrie) McGhee of Pensacola; two daughters, Venia Jane McGhee (Michael) McMorris of Birmingham and Kulua Ann (Doug) Byrd of Atmore; one sister, Carolyn (Bear) Stanton of Indianapolis, Ind.; 13 grandchildren, Tressa, Alysha, Samantha, Heather, Taylor, Harley, Tyler, Aaron, Dylen, Nikki, Hannah, Tiffany and Drake; and six great-grandchildren, Adrienne, Traegan, Kaydence, Blakelynn, Ophelia and Aurora.

Funeral services were held Nov. 7, 2017, at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Lewis Banks officiating.

Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation was Nov. 7 at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Danny Lowery, Tommy Pickern, Nate Fernandez, Michael Byrd, David Parker, Anthony Wilson and Corey Stakes.

Miriam Luker Milliken

Mrs. Miriam Luker Milliken, 90, of Atmore, passed away on Mon., Oct. 30, 2017.

She worked many years with Judge Hugh Rozelle and later as the first female sergeant at Holman Prison. She loved her Lord and was an active and long-time member of Presley Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezell and Madora Luker; husband, Vincent Milliken; brother, Leo Luker; and sister, Mary McMath.

Mrs. Luker is survived by her children, Larry Milliken Sr., Alan Milliken and Rhonda (Butch) Kinney; sister, Lois Amerson; grandchildren, Larry (Lisa) Milliken Jr., Jennifer (Dennis) Keller, Mark Milliken, Roger Milliken and Allyson (Nicholas) Moscond; great-grandchildren, Hunter (Hannah) Milliken, Sara Milliken, Jackson and Darby Moscond; great-great-grandchildren, Tyson, Levi and Chase Milliken; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Nov. 3, 2017, at Presley Street Baptist Church. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family received friends Nov. 3 at Presley Street Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Presley Street Baptist Church.
