An Atmore man died from a medical emergency before crashing a freightliner on Highway 31 near Byrne Road early this morning, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Lt. Joe Piggott said that the crash occurred at 4:11 a.m., and that Danny Wayne Boyington, 53, was driving a 2007 Freightliner, an empty log truck, southbound on Highway 31 and drifted onto the shoulder and came to a rest in the wood line.

“It is believed he suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash that resulted in his death,” Piggott said, adding that his death wasn’t due to the crash.

Piggott said the cause of Boyington’s medical emergency will not be known until an autopsy is performed, and reports are released.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
