Gleaning radishes.

That’s what a group of employees from United Bank and Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center were partaking in on Jason Weber’s land last week to help those who are in need.

The work was a part of the Farm to Table initiative with UB, and went to support Feeding the Gulf Coast and fighting hunger. Once the radishes were pulled up, they were washed and then given out to families in need at Empowerment Tabernacle Christian Center. Additionally, recipe cards were given out as the radishes were distributed.

UB President and CEO Bob Jones said this partnership between the Farm to Table initiative and Feeding the Gulf Coast has been going on for a few years. Feeding the Gulf Coast is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. GFA’s mission is to feed America’s hungry through a nationwide network of 200 member food banks. GFA’s county outreach is 24 counties, and spans from Mississippi to Florida.

“This is a new adventure for us,” Jones said. “United Bank has been trying to tackle what’s been going on in or area. With so many of our customers farmers, there is a lot of opportunity here to feed those in need.”

Empowerment Pastor Darryl North said the church is thankful to UB for this opportunity.

“Our community has come recently together with so many acts of kindness,” North said.

Jones added that it’s good for people to come out and work together.
