CCOA to sponsor MLK Day events

The Concerned Citizens of Atmore is gearing up for another year as they the holiday observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day here.

This year’s national theme is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day on… Not A Day Off.” MLK Jr. Day falls on Mon., Jan. 15, 2018.

The CCA “Unity in the Community” and other businesses and organizations will be sponsoring the events, which kick off next Fri., Jan. 12, with the MLK Community Day of Service.

The day of service runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will be held at the Unity House at 313 N. Main St. The day is held to assist families and individuals get a good hot meal, clothes, shoes, household items, linen, furniture, paint and other items at no cost.

Then, on Sat., Jan. 13, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. annual Unity Prayer Breakfast will be held at the Atmore Community Hospital Mason Auditorium. The breakfast is from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Cost is $12 per person, and tickets can be purchase from a CCOA member or those coming can pay at the door.

On the actual observance day, Mon., Jan. 15, the MLK Parade, march and events will be held.

Parade line up is at Houston Avery Park from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. The parade will start at 10 a.m.

Parade entry fee is $10 per unit (vehicles and floats) and funds will be used to serve the community’s needs. All floats entered in the parade will be judged prior to the parade start. First and second place trophies will be awarded.

Applications for the parade are available at the Unity House in the mailbox. All applications must be turned in by Fri., Jan. 12, before 7 p.m.
